Pain Perdu
Pain perdu is French for "lost bread," meaning bread that has gone stale.

2 eggs, beaten
1 cup cream (or milk or half-n-half)
1 tbs sugar
1 pinch salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
Several slices of day-old bread
butter for skillet
powdered sugar
cinnamon to taste

Blackberry sauce:  2 cups frozen or fresh blackberries, 1 1/2 tbs powdered sugar

Combine the eggs, cream, sugar, salt, vanilla. Soak 2 slices of bread in mixture. Remove bread from mixture, letting excess drip back into bowl. Heat a little butter in a skillet and fry bread until golden brown on both sides.

Put blackberries and sugar into a saucepan on low heat and cook until bread is done.

When pain perdu is done, serve with lots of powdered sugar, a little cinnamon and blackberry sauce.
